Start with one list
Write down every recurring bill the household pays: rent or mortgage, utilities, internet, insurance, phones, subscriptions and any loans. For each one, note the amount, the due day and who usually pays it. Seeing them side by side is often the first time both people know the real monthly total.
Decide how you'll split
There's no right answer, only one you both agree on. Common setups:
- Each person owns certain bills. One pays rent, the other pays utilities and internet. Simple, as long as the totals feel fair.
- Split each bill by percentage. 50/50, or in proportion to income (60/40, for example).
- A shared account for shared bills. Both contribute a set amount each month and the bills come out of it.
Make "paid" visible to both of you
Most arguments about bills come from one question: did that get paid? Whatever you use, both people should be able to see, without asking, which bills are done this month and which aren't. A shared note or spreadsheet works if you both keep it up to date. A shared bill tracker does it for you.
Get reminded, both of you
Set a reminder a few days before each due date, on both phones. If the person who usually pays is traveling or busy, the other one sees it too.
Check in once a month
Five minutes at the start of the month is enough: look at what's due, notice anything that went up, and settle any difference in what each of you paid.
Doing this in Loulen
Loulen is built for exactly this. Create a household and invite your partner or roommates with a short invite code. Everyone in the household sees the same bills, who paid each one, and what's left to pay this month.
- Split any bill by percentage.
- Reminders arrive on every member's phone, not just the person who added the bill.
- An activity feed shows every change, so nobody has to ask.
- The household score and on-time streak grow as you pay on time together.
- Loulen never asks for a bank login, so nobody has to share theirs.
Sharing is part of Premium, for households of up to 5 people. Premium is $29.99 a year, with a 7-day free trial on the annual plan, or $4.99 a month. Members see the household's bills and payments, but not each other's login or account details.
